Maxicorp was the largest corporation within the Earth Republic, and a producer of nearly every imaginable product. In many fields they had a licensed monopoly, and it operated with de facto extranational and extraplanetary status until October 2155, when the Earth Republic ordered the Star Navy to nationalize all Maxicorp assets and virtually eradicated it as a corporate or political entity.
Maxicorp operated out of Alastor Shipyard at Stein, over which it enjoyed almost total control with the right to exploit all of the system's extensive and profitable resources, and considered its employees and their families corporate citizens, some for multiple generations. While the Earth Republic has traditionally considered all humans and partial humans to be legacy citizens with a right to Earth's protection, Maxicorp corporate citizens typically eschew these rights and protections unless it becomes absolutely necessary to claim them; in the other direction, Maxicorp citizens often do not see themselves as having any particular loyalty, duty, or obligation to Earth, humanity, or the Earth Republic, though this varies from individual to individual. Maxicorp's internal culture and economy is capitalistic and corporate, very much in conflict with the political and economic system of the modern Earth Republic and standing in ideological conflict with it.
